Follow the open house checklist
to ensure it shows at it's best.

Morning of the Open House or Showing:

  • Open drapes, curtains and blinds, to get maximum light
  • Turn on all of the lights in each room
  • Turn on interior lights in china cabinet or shelves
  • Ensure temperature is comfortable throughout house
  • Turn on all ceiling fans, on a low setting
  • Turn on soothing music at a low volume
  • Put away the newspapers and magazines
  • Fire in fireplace, if appropriate
  • Close TV cabinet doors
  • Remove any pets, pet dishes, or litter boxes
  • Empty all garbage cans or remove them to increase traffic flow
  • Clear off kitchen counter tops, including items such as appliances
  • Hide or temporarily disconnect obtrusive extension cords
  • Toilet seats down
  • Fluff beds and pillows in all bedrooms
  • Be sure to place valuable items in a secure place, i.e. cash, jewelery, medications, etc.
  • Create a nice scent by grinding coffee beans or by baking cinnamon rolls in the oven on low
  • All exterior house doors should be open
  • Walk-in Closet doors open
  • Keep soothing music on low
  • Always have fresh flowers on hand during home selling months and place them throughout home (particularly in bathrooms and bedrooms)

Curb Appeal

Day Before Open House:
  • Check all the lights to make sure they work; install new light bulbs if needed
  • Sweep the street in front of your house and all steps and walkways
  • Make sure the siding on your home is clean and all windows are washed

Morning of Open House:

  • Park cars down the street and away from driveway and front of house in order to give buyers clear picture of home
  • Remove any front lawn debris, toys, trash cans, pet debris, etc.
  • Garage doors down and front door wide open (weather permitting)
